Gus Van Sant's 'Promised Land' Officially Enters Awards Season With 2012 Release Date

Focus Features has officially announced that Gus Van Sant’s “Promised Land” will be released in 2012 and thus join this year’s fast approaching awards season. The film — starring and written by John Krasinski and Matt Damon — will be released in exclusive engagements in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, December 28th, 2012, prior to an expansion in January 2013.

Participant Media co-financed the movie, for which Focus holds worldwide rights. In addition to Damon and Krasinski, the cast of “Promised Land” includes Rosemarie DeWitt (“Rachel Getting Married”), Academy Award nominee Hal Holbrook (“Into the Wild”), Scoot McNairy (“Killing Them Softly”), Titus Welliver (“The Town”), and Academy Award winner Frances McDormand. The screenplay is based on a story by Dave Eggers.

The plot, as described in a press release:

“Mr. Damon plays Steve Butler, a corporate salesman who arrives in a rural town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Ms. McDormand). With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Mr. Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (Mr. Krasinski) who counters Steve both personally and professionally.”
