Check out this NASA video, "Seven Minutes of Terror," that details how the Mars Curiosity Rover landed on Mars. It was on its own for the rapid seven-minute landing on the surface of the red planet because it takes 14 minutes for the the Rover to communicate with Earth–it all happened Sunday night around 10:30 Pacific Time.
