Watch: See Zac Efron Dance in His Tighty Whities in Trailer for Lee Daniels' Divisive 'The Paperboy'

No film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival garnered a more divisive response than “The Paperboy,” Lee Daniels’ anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-winning “Precious.” The saucy potboiler, based on the popular novel by Pete Dexter, drew harsh criticism for the most part (including from our own Eric Kohn who said the film “isn’t a parody but rather an oddly self-aware mess”), while a handful of critics championed aspects of the film, including The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy who singled out Nicole Kidman’s brazen lead turn.

“The Paperboy” is set in Miami in the 1960s, where a directionless young man Jack James (Zac Efron) is drafted in to help his journalist brother (Matthew McConaughey) investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man (John Cusack) on death row. Kidman co-stars as a woman corresponding with the prisoner.

The just released trailer (courtesy of Yahoo!) gives a good sense of the tawdry tone Daniels was going for, while showcasing Kidman’s scene stealing turn and Efron’s defining asset (we’ll let you guess what that is).

Millennium Films opens the thriller on October 5. Go HERE for our interview with Daniels.
