Mindy Kaling is exiting her role as Kelly Kapoor on NBC’s “The Office” (though she announced plans to return for a few episodes in what’s slated to be the mockumentary’s last season) for territory all her own — her new show “The Mindy Project” kicks off on Fox this fall, and is co-created and produced by Kaling alongside Howard Klein.

In “The Mindy Project,” Kaling plays Mindy Lahiri, a doctor struggling to find romance and to balance her work and personal life. Kaling is smart, winning and funny — qualities that are always welcome — and certainly to have a minority lead character and not have race be the primary focus of his or her show is still far too rare a thing.
“The Mindy Project” premieres on Fox on September 25, but courtesy of Hulu, you can watch the pilot episode below, now. Is Kaling the new voice of broadcast comedy? Weigh in in the comments.
