Written by Max Landis (the son of John Landis) and directed by first-timer Josh Trank, found-footage film “Chronicle” was one of the year’s early, pleasant surprises, both with critics and at the box office.
The movie follows three Seattle high school students who develop telekinetic powers after encountering a mysterious object. Initially, they use their new abilities to goof around the way teenagers probably would, but the story takes a darker tone as one of the three, bullied and from an abusive home, begins to use his powers to destructive ends.
The complex take on the superhero trope seems to be working for Landis, as he’s just landed a gig writing a pilot script for the similarly themed “Vigilant” for Fox. According to Deadline, the potential series is centered on a 20-year-old woman who’s both brilliant and a social outcast. The daughter of a hard-working, well-intentioned detective who’s forced into serving under the corrupt head of Internal Affairs invents of vigilante persona to battle crime both within and outside of the department.

“Vigilant” is executive produced by Howard Gordon, who developed “Homeland” for Showtime with Alex Gansa — a series up for a best drama Emmy. Gordon, who previously served as showrunner on “24,” has already sold four new TV projects via his Teakwood Lane production company, including a futuristic thriller for NBC from “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” creator Josh Friedman.
