Is he or isn’t he? When Joss Whedon decided to kill off beloved Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) in “The Avengers,” fanboys immediately took to the interwebs to declare, speculate and hypothesize that he wasn’t really dead, and that if viewed a certain way, he could still be alive. Or maybe it was a grand fakeout by Nick Fury to motivate the superheroes to work together. Well, whatever the fate of Coulson in the Marvel universe (though if they bring him back, it sort of takes the emotional stakes right out of Whedon’s film) there will be more fodder for fans to pick over.
The folks over at Topless Robot (via ONTD) have made a rather interesting discovery concerning the U.K. and U.S. versions of “The Avengers” that’s about to hit shelves. Notably, in Coulson’s death scene on the stateside release, we see Loki’s staff coming out of his chest, but in the U.K. release…we don’t (see both scenes below). Is something afoot? Did someone in the AV room goof up? Nah. U.K. censors tend to be much more particular about violence, especially as it pertains to movies geared toward kids, and we’d guess it’s one of the minor edits that needed to be made for the film to secure a 12A rating.
But of course, that likely won’t stop those who want to believe. “The Avengers” hits home video on September 25th.
