Film Movement Acquires Rufus Norris' Cannes Critics' Week Drama 'Broken,' Starring Tim Roth

Rufus Norris’ “Broken,” the opening-night film of the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, has been acquired for U.S. distribution by Film Movement. The film is slated for a theatrical release in early 2013 in addition to a cable VOD premiere.

The film is an adaptation of Daniel Clay’s novel of the same name, an intimate, coming-of-age story about an 11-year-old British girl named Skunk whose innocence is shattered after she witnesses the brutal beating of a psychologically troubled boy by one of her grown neighbors. Skunk is played by newcomer Eloise Laurence, who stars with Tim Roth and Cillian Murphy.

“Rufus Norris’ intricately structured and emotionally powerful feature moved us to tears,” said Film Movement president Adley Gartenstein, who negotiated the deal with Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch. “As always, it’s a pleasure to see Tim Roth on screen, but the real discovery here is Eloise Laurence, who we can bet will steal everyone’s heart.”

Film Movement’s other recent acquisitions include two French films: Catherine Corsini’s “Three Worlds” and Elie Wajeman’s “Alyah,” both of which also screened at Cannes. The company’s current releases include Mads Matthiesen’s “Teddy Bear,” Brazilian director Julia Murat’s “Found Memories” and the Israeli film “Off White Lies.”
