FilmDistrict Snatches Up Spike Lee's 'Oldboy' Remake With Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen

FilmDistrict has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Spike Lee-directed remake of “Oldboy,” which only recently completed filming.

Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley star in the Mark Protosevich-penned adaptation of the 2003 South Korean thriller from Chan-wook Park, about a man looking for revenge on the people who imprisoned him for 20 years and then released him without explanation.

The project, which Steven Spielberg was at one point considering as a collaboration with Will Smith at DreamWorks, is a Good Universe, 40 Acres & A Mule and Vertigo Entertainment production. Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison produced with Nathan Kahane of Good Universe; FilmDistrict CEO Peter Schlessel, Joe Drake of Good Universe and John Middleton are executive producers.

“Spike Lee is the right filmmaker to re-imagine and put his touch onto arguably one of the most talked-about thrillers in recent memory,” said Schlessel. “The cast that he and producers Nathan, Joe, Roy and Doug have put together is sure to elevate the material and engage audiences. FilmDistrict is proud to be releasing one of the first films from Good Universe here in the U.S.”

FilmDistrict has recently released “Insidious,” “Soul Surfer” and “Drive.” The company’s “Looper” opened the Toronto International Film Festival Thursday night ahead of its late-September theatrical release, and FilmDistrict will release “Red Dawn” and “Playing for Keeps” before year’s end.
