Helen Mirren Continues Her Reign in 'The Audience,' Reprises Role of Elizabeth II for the Stage

Helen Mirren will be The Queen again, but this time it’s on stage in “The Audience,” a new play by Peter Morgan focusing on the relationship of Queen Elizabeth II with the 12 prime ministers who served during her epic reign. Mirren’s top-notch career doesn’t seem to be flagging a bit, with news Thursday that “Hitchcock,” in which she stars as Hitch’s wife and discerning collaborator Alma Reville, will be an Oscar contender.

“The Audience” begins performances at the Gieguld Theater in London’s West End on February 15, 2013. The Telegraph reports that the play’s title derives from the weekly private discussions held between Elizabeth and her various prime ministers. We got a taste of that in the Elizabeth-Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) faceoffs in Stephen Frear’s 2006 “The Queen,” for which Mirren won her Best Actress Oscar and Morgan earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
