The Board of Governors of the Locarno Film Festival has chosen journalist and film critic Carlo Chatrian as its new artistic director. He succeeds Olivier Père, who stepped down last week to take over Arte France Cinéma, beginning November 1.

Chatrian began working with the festival in 2002 and over the years has curated several of Locarno’s high-profile filmmaker retrospectives. He also recently has been a consultant to the Swiss Cinematheque in Lausanne and director of the “Film Commission Vallée d’Aoste” Foundation.
“I have been keeping a watchful eye on Carlo Chatrian for several years now,” said festival president Marco Solari. “I have always appreciated both his intelligence and professional abilities. Carlo Chatrian knows our event inside out and has the charisma and qualifications required to lead the Locarno Festival.”
In the 1990s, Chatrian worked as a film critic for magazines such as Filmcritica, Duellanti, Cineforum and Panoramiques, and he has taught film classes at a variety of schools. As a programmer, he has worked with festivals and institutions such as Cinéma du réel in Paris, the Museo nazionale del cinema in Turin, the Courmayeur – Noir in Festival, the Alba Film Festival, the Florence Festival dei Popoli and the Nyon Festival Visions du Réel.
