‘Resident Evil’ Director Paul W. S. Anderson May Wrangle Video Game Adaptation ‘Monster Hunter’

'Resident Evil' Director Paul W. S. Anderson May Wrangle Video Game Adaptation 'Monster Hunter'

Who’s your favorite Paul Anderson? Well, chances are that it’s probably not the one we’re about to discuss here, but surely by now you’re Paul Thomas Anderson-ed out, aren’t you? Let’s give Paul William Scott Anderson his time to shine. The fifth (and presumed penultimate) installment in the “Resident Evil” franchise hits theaters tomorrow, and it’s the third that Anderson has helmed. If he does end his involvement with the series after the sixth entry, then he may just be on the lookout for another franchise that will keep paying the bills.

And if a Google translation of an interview Anderson gave to a Japanese website is to be believed, that next franchise could just be Capcom’s “Monster Hunter.” Capcom, of course, are the company behind the “Resident Evil” games, and so it would make sense that both they and Anderson would want to continue a very commercially successful partnership. “Monster Hunter” is one of the company’s other big hitters, having sold over 20 million units since its launch in 2004.

The fantasy action game sees the player taking the role of a rookie hunter who completes quests that usually involve tracking and hunting a variety of creatures. It sounds like a pretty loose format for Anderson to play around with (although we’re sure there will be fans of the game who would disagree) and it sounds like a very easy one to sell. Of course, it doesn’t sound like a particularly good idea for a film either, but remember which Anderson we’re dealing with here and he’ll probably be able to churn out something blandly entertaining nevertheless. Likely in 3D. [Cinema Today via Punch Drunk Critics]
