‘The Sapphires,’ ‘The Oranges’ and ‘Seven Psychopaths’ to Headline San Diego Film Festival

'The Sapphires,' 'The Oranges' and 'Seven Psychopaths' to Headline San Diego Film Festival

The 11th annual San Diego Film Festival returns this month with over 100 screenings, panel discussions and nightly cinematic celebrations throughout the Gaslamp District. The titles of the festival’s Headline and Premiere films were officially released Wednesday, and the lineup includes 11 world premieres and 4 U.S. premieres.

Wayne Blair’s Vietnam-era film about an all-girl pop group, ‘The Sapphires,’ was chosen to screen on opening night, as was Julian Farino’s romantic comedy ‘The Oranges.’ Other festival highlights include Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut ‘Quartet,’ and festival closer ‘Grassroots,’ directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated film at the festival is ‘Seven Psychopaths,’ a comedy written and directed by Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh that stars Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken. A Gus Van Sant retrospective and honorary tribute rounds out the bill.

Unlike in previous years, in addition to the Gaslamp District location the festivities, running Sept. 26-30, will be held at a second venue in nearby La Jolla.
