TIFF Deal Alert: David Michôd's 'Animal Kingdom' Follow-up 'The Rover' is Selling Like Hotcakes with Pattinson & Pearce

David Michôd’s “The Rover,” set to shoot this winter, is a hot ticket. This is not surprising, given his 2009 knockout feature debut “Animal Kingdom,” and that he’s directing Guy Pearce (also in “Animal Kingdom”) and Robert Pattinson in this follow-up. FilmNation picked up nearly all worldwide rights back in Cannes and is continuing to shop the film in Toronto. “The Rover” has already sold several territories, including the UK, Canada and Benelux to eOne, Scandinavia to Nordisk, Latin America to Sun Distribution, the Middle East to Italia Film, and Eastern Europe (excl. Russia) to Revolutionary Releasing. Village Roadshow is also set for Australia and New Zealand.

Fellow Aussie (and “Animal Kingdom” star) Joel Edgerton helped to conceive the project, for which Michôd also wrote the script. It is set in the near future and follows a loner (Pearce) traveling the desolate Australian outback. A gang steals his car and his sole remaining possessions, while leaving behind a wounded man (Pattinson) who has to help track down the gang in order to retrieve what was taken.

Here’s more with Michôd and our video interview with “Animal Kingdom” evil-mama Jacki Weaver.
