Cinedigm Entertainment Group got into the Toronto action Friday with the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to “Come Out and Play” (“Juego De Niños”), which had its world premiere at the Ryerson Theatre Thursday at midnight. The company plans an early 2013 theatrical rollout followed by digital and DVD releases.
The English-language horror film from Belarus-born writer-director Makinov, which screened in the Midnight Madness section of the fest, stars Vinessa Shaw and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as vacationing soon-to-be-parents who end up on an island mysteriously inhabited only by children. Pablo Cruz of Canana Films produced.
“We’ll admit that at first we didn’t know what to make of Makinov,” Cinedigm acquisitions exec Vincent Scordino said of the director, who wears a mask during filming to de-emphasize the typically authoritarian role of the director. “That confusion ended upon seeing this provocative film. We can’t wait to introduce it to horror audiences, as well as anyone considering having children.”
Scordino negotiated the deal with Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers.
Cinedigm has recently released “Life In A Day,” “The Ward” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” Forthcoming releases include “No Room For Rockstars,” “The Invisible War” and “Citadel,” a horror film that screened at SXSW and will open in theaters in October.
