After an almost unbearably long wait, with cameras first rolling a year ago, we now have our first footage from “Oldboy” director Park Chan-wook‘s English-language debut “Stoker,” and yes, it looks pretty damn great.
Evoking a really old school sense of atmosphere and dread, the tone seems appropriate considering the Wentworth Miller-penned script has been described as a fantastical, fairy tale-like family drama that follows the story of an eccentric teen, India (Mia Wasikowska), whose enigmatic and estranged uncle (Matthew Goode) returns to the family after the death of the girl’s father. People, however, start to go missing in her hometown at the same time and she soon discovers that her uncle may be the cause. Nicole Kidman is along for the ride as India’s mother, and it looks like she’s delivering yet another first rate performance. Toss in a supporting cast featuring Alden Ehrenreich, Jacki Weaver, Dermot Mulroney and Lucas Till, along with a score by Clint Mansell, and it’s almost a crime that we have to wait until next year to see the whole thing.
For now, this brief tease on “Entertainment Tonight” (via The Film Stage) will have to do, and we are loving what we’re seeing so far. It looks like Park’s distinctive visual eye is very much in place, albeit within a movie that looks to be seeing him try out some new, almost Hitchcock-ian territory. “Stoker” lands on March 1, 2013 with a trailer arriving next week.
