The trailer for “Promised Land,” co-written and co-starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski, gives audiences a taste of the moral concerns that will be tackled in Gus Van Sant’s latest directorial venture.
Steve Butler (Damon) believes everyone has his price as his company sends him to a small, rural town with his sales partner Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand) to acquire drilling rights to its farmers’ properties. “I thought it would be harder,” McDormand says as they take care of business. “It’s too easy.” That is, until Krasinski’s and Hal Holbrook’s characters step forward to push back against corporate interests.
If the trailer tells us anything, it’s that nothing is ever quite so simple; conflict quickly arises between what the natural gas company looks to achieve and what values the townspeople yearn to perpetuate. That, and Damon knows how to pick up women in bars — though Krasinski may be better at keeping them.
