ABC Working On Charlize Theron-Produced Viking Drama, Comedy From 'The Hangover' Writers & More

Here’s some small-screen news including some projects brewing over at ABC and a cast member of “The Office” getting his own show….

First up, Charlize Theron continues to expanding the roster of projects that she’ll shepherd as a producer. She’s got a feature about war reporter Marie Colvin in the works (that she might star in), and at NBC a contemporary version of the “Hatfields & McCoys” as well as a project called “Holiday.” Now she heads to ABC with “The Clan,” a drama set against the backdrop of medieval Scotland that will follow the tale of various clans battling each other, all while they hold off impending attacks from Vikings. Interesting stuff, and certainly ambitious for network TV. Terry George (“Hotel Rwanda“) will write and direct, and we can’t help but think this is an attempt to try and capture the “Game Of Thrones” audience (but with less boobs and dragons). We shall see. Meanwhile, “The Hangover” writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore keep on truckin’. They’ve got their directorial debut “21 & Over” coming next spring, but ideas centering around booze and young people don’t end there. The duo has sold “Mixology,” a new comedy, to ABC. The premise follows five girls and give guys who try to find love over the course of one night at trendy Manhattan bar. “We’ve been working in features for a while, and we couldn’t be more excited to now bring our trademark brand of lame dialogue, thin characters, and gimmicky concepts to television,” Lucas said in statement. Let’s hope that sarcasm isn’t sincere. [Deadline]

Finally, with “The Office” closing its doors after this season, the cast are busy trying to find new gigs. Rainn Wilson has the spinoff “The Farm,” which we can’t imagine anyone caring about, Mindy Kaling already has “The Mindy Project” up and running at Fox, and John Krasinski is embarking on a feature career with “Promised Land” in December. Well, Craig Robinson is hoping “The Office” co-creator Greg Daniels can spin some magic for him. The comic actor is set to star in an untitled show about a musician who finds a new career as a music teacher in a middle school. Yawn. “School Of Rock” much? [Deadline]
