Broken Lizard Duo Sell Comedy Series 'High Maintenance' to ABC

These days, the members of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard seem more focused on either their own work or in just pairing up for projects, with nothing they’ve put out in collaboration or individually making much of a splash. Jay Chandrasekhar recently directed Kevin Heffernan in “The Babymakers.” Erik Stolhanske is starring in a self-help comedy called “RockBarnes: The Emperor in You.”

Steve Lemme produced and acted alongside Steve Guttenberg and Beverly D’Angelo in a family movie called “I Heart Shakey” that came out on DVD in August. And Paul Soter wrote and directed horror film “Dark Circles.” The group produced “Freeloaders,” a comedy starring Clifton Collins Jr., Olivia Munn and Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz that never found a distributor — their last work as full collaborators was 2009’s “The Slammin’ Salmon,” which premiered at Slamdance.

So it’s potentially a good thing that at least a fraction of Broken Lizard is turning to a new medium that might provide a refresh for their particular brand of comedy. While Chandrasekhar has become an in-demand TV director with multiple episodes of “Community,” “Psych” and “Happy Endings” under his belt, according to Deadline, Heffernan and Lemme now have their own small screen project in the works. ABC recently purchased “High Maintenance” from the pair, a comedy based on Lemme’s experiences as a elevator attendant in a luxury building in New York during college. Heffernan and Lemme will write and act in the project about the staff at a high-end apartment building.

The pair also do stand-up together and have been touring the country all year — their stand-up special “Fat Man Little Boy” will reportedly be released by Netflix later this year. Meanwhile, the idea of “Super Troopers 2” is still being floated around by different troupe members, though no solid plans seem in place for the film.
