On the eve of the Academy’s October 1 foreign film submission deadline, both China and Uruguay selected films to vie for a Best Foreign Language nomination.
China picked Chen Kaige’s social drama “Caught in the Web,” which grossed $28 million at the Chinese box office this summer. “Caught in the Web” is the fourth Chen film submitted by China for the Oscars. His 1993 film “Farewell My Concubine” was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography, as well as winning the Palm d’Or at Cannes.
Uruguay selected Rodrigo Pla’s family drama “La Demora” (“The Delay”). Inspired by true events, it describes an overwhelmed woman who left her three small children and senile father on a park bench.
