CNN Launches CNN Films to Acquire and Air Feature Docs, Signs Deal With Alex Gibney (Video)

CNN is getting into the distribution game.

With the creation of CNN Films, the news company plans to acquire feature documentaries to air on its domestic and international channels as well as theatrically, beginning with the global education doc “Girl Rising” in the spring. CNN Films also has signed development deals with Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side”) and Andrew Rossi (“Page One: Inside the New York Times”) to create original documentaries for the label.

“CNN Films will bring distinguished, thought-provoking documentary programming to our global audiences on all our television, online and mobile platforms,” said CNN worldwide managing editor Mark Whitaker. “We want these documentaries to tell compelling stories and stimulate important discussions across CNN’s other programs and websites.”

The CNN Films documentaries will have their premieres in primetime and anchor related contextual programming on other CNN shows and online platforms. “Girl Rising,” which was directed by Richard E. Robbins and features narration by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington and Selena Gomez, inspired a global action campaign to promote girls’ education called 10×10.

Amy Entelis, senior vice president of talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, and Vinnie Malhotra, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide, will oversee the CNN Films acquisitions strategy. The label expects to partner with other distributors on theatrical and festival exposure for its films.
