In the latest demonstration of the growing power of web series and podcasts to launch talent and potential TV shows, a pilot based on the web series “Broad City” has been ordered by Comedy Central, the network announced today. Created, written by and starring Upright Citizens Brigade alums Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the online series, which was launched in late 2009, follows the girls through a typical array of cringe-inducing but funny New York experiences.
It’s great to be funny, but it also doesn’t hurt to have friends like “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler, who’s an executive producer of the pilot along with Jacobson, Glazer, Dave Becky and Sam Saifer. Tony Hernandez will serve as co-executive producer.
In the announcement, Kent Alterman, Comedy Central’s head of original programming and production, said, “Amy Poehler told me this would be a great show for us, and that’s good enough for me.” So there you go. Poehler has appeared as a guest star on the series, as have Kristen Schaal and Hannibal Buress.
