Tim League's Drafthouse Films has acquired "Pieta," South Korea's official entry in the 2013 Best Foreign Language Oscar race. From award-winning director Kim Ki-duk ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… And Spring"), the violent must-see drama, which I saw in Toronto, focuses on a lethal loan shark who maims his vitims for a living. He is forced to reconsider his dangerous lifestyle and his own humanity when a mysterious woman arrives on his doorstep claiming to be the mother he never had.
"Pieta" won Venice's "Golden Lion" award this year. Drafthouse plans a limited theatrical and multi-platform VOD release for 2013. (Video clip below.)
