Frank Darabont, James Franco & Billy Bob Thornton Are Heading to the Austin Film Festival

Billy Bob Thornton’s latest co-writing-directing effort, “Jayne Mansfield’s Car,” will screen as the Austin Film Festival’s closing-night film Oct. 25, fest organizers announced Wednesday. Additionally, “The Shawshank Redemption” writer-director Frank Darabont has been chosen to receive the festival’s Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking Award this year.

Thornton and Darabont both will be in Austin for the festival, as will James Franco, whose “Francophrenia” will screen Oct. 19. “Hyde Park on Hudson,” “Whole Lotta Sole” and “Deadfall” also have been added to the program.

Previously announced honorees include “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” writer Eric Roth, who will receive the Distinguished Screenwriter Award, and “The X-Files” creator Chris Carter, who will receive the Outstanding Television Writer Award. They and Darabont will accept their awards at an award luncheon Oct 20. at the Austin Club. John Lasseter, Robert Rodriguez, Danny Boyle and Oliver Stone have received the Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking honor in previous years.

Darabont, actor America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) and writer-director David Chase (“Not Fade Away”) will participate in public conversations during the festival’s screenwriting conference.

The festival’s opening-night film is Chase’s “Not Fade Away,” and the centerpiece film is Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight.”

The 19th annual Austin Film Festival runs from Oct 18-25.
