‘Magic Mike’ and ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ Available on VOD Before DVD

'Magic Mike' and 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Available on VOD Before DVD

The studios are messing around with once-rigid ancillary windows. The trend to push movies to earlier video-on-demand releases is manifested by two dramatically different films this week: Timur Bakmembetov’s twisted history action flick, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” and Steven Soderbergh’s sexy male-stripper dramedy “Magic Mike,” starring Channing Tatum and Mathew McConaughey.

Vudu and iTunes are offering them both for rent right now, well before the movies are released on disc on October 23.  Ridley Scott’s bewildering but beautiful “Alien” prequel, “Prometheus,” has been available for download to own for several weeks, but it will be available for “rent” on VOD the same day it is released on Blu-ray 3-D, Blu-ray, and DVD. And so it goes as well with “Rock of Ages,” Adam Shankman’s awful 80s hair-band musical that does offer a watchable performance from heavy metal rocker Tom Cruise.

TOH interviews Caleb Deschanel, cinematographer of ‘Vampire Hunter,” here as well as author Seth Grahame-Smith, who adapted his own novel.
