Mary Harron Will Direct Lifetime’s Anna Nicole Smith Biopic

Mary Harron, the filmmaker behind “American Psycho” and “I Shot Andy Warhol,” will next be directing a Lifetime original movie.

According to Deadline, Harron has been signed on to helm “The Anna Nicole Story,” with Agnes Bruckner (“Blue Car,” “Blood and Chocolate”) in the lead role as the late Texas-born model and actress. Harron will be in good company — Martin Landau and Virgina Madsen will co-star in the film, which was written by John Rice and Joe Batteer. Madsen will play Smith’s mother, while Landau will play Smith’s husband, the oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall, who married the then-stripper Smith when he was 89 and she was 26.

Harron’s worked in television between films, directing episodes of “Oz,” “The L Word,” “Six Feet Under” and “Big Love,” and Lifetime’s clearly looking to go bigger with its original features and to move away from being just soapy true crime reenactments — the upcoming “Liz & Dick,” with Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor, has been particularly high profile. But it’s hard not to look at this as anything other than a step down for the very talented Harron, whose last film, the gothic girls boarding school drama “The Moth Diaries,” opened in limited release in theaters in April and was not well received by critics.

“The Anna Nicole Story” is, content-wise, not that far removed from Harron’s 2005 film “The Notorious Bettie Page,” which also told the story of a voluptuous real-life pin-up. Here’s hoping Lifetime will allow her to bring an interesting take to the tale.
