'Mr. SOUL!' Docu (Sam Pollard, Melissa Haizlip, Bradford Young) Closes in on Final Day of Fundraising

Mr. SOUL!: Ellis Haizlip and the Birth of Black Power TV, the feature length documentary profiling one of the most controversial, successful, and socially significant TV shows in US history, is closing in on its final day of fundraising towards its $75,000 goal.

The film gives a behind-the-scenes look at the 1960s/1970s series SOUL, known as the “first black tonight show,” as well as its longtime host and producer Ellis Haizlip.

Throughout the show’s six-year span, Haizlip produced over 130 shows featuring guests including Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, James Baldwin, Stevie Wonder, Maya Angelou, Ashford and Simpson, The Last Poets, Nikki Giovanni, Al Green and Muhammad Ali.

Haizlip’s niece, Melissa Haizlip, and legendary filmmaker Samuel Pollard co-direct the documentary, with Arrion Copeland producing and Bradford Young as Director of Photography.

The team is about halfway to their fundraising goal, having raised over $36,000 to date. Funds will help match a recent grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and will support production. There are just 20 hours left in the campaign at the time of this post, so if you planned to donate and haven’t already done so, better get to it.
