Nerd alert! Starting today, folks will be able to get their geek on at the New York Comic Con, and never one to miss a marketing opportunity, studios are unfurling new marketing swag, so let’s get to it.
Next summer, Guillermo Del Toro will return to the big screen with his big sci-fi spectacle “Pacific Rim,” and has released a nice little viral poster to get the ball rolling. With the movie being led by mostly smaller names — Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day — it’s gonna have to be the spectacle that brings people in. The story will follow a human resistance against a series of devastating attacks that threaten to destroy Earth. And part of that fight will be some ginormous badass robot things. And this propaganda-style poster gives an illustrated look at the machines that are operated by humans.
It’s one of WB’s bigger — and potentially riskier — offerings of 2013, but to make sure everyone knows what it is by July 12th, they will be doing a multi-platform blitzkrieg, including a prequel graphic novel to be produced by Del Toro. Dude never sleeps.
Meanwhile, Arnie continues on the comeback train with “The Last Stand” and it gets an appropriately cheesy poster. The concept is fairly low rent, with the Governator playing a disgraced cop who has to defend a small town from marauding drug dealers, but hopefully “I Saw The Devil” helmer Kim Jee Woon brings some flair to the proceedings. But the January 18th release date isn’t all that promising.
Lastly, the poster for “Texas Chainsaw 3D” is here. It’s mostly notable because it’s the first time we realized that the word “Massacre” has been dropped from the title. Which seems weird when you’re trying to sell a horror movie. Right now, it sounds like the most badass Home Depot training movie ever made. It opens on January 4th. [The Film Stage/EW]
