One of the key dates in the awards season, the New York Film Critics Circle’s voting, has returned to its usual time frame: December 3. The NYFCC is a bellwether of the Oscars and boasts the most impact of any critics group–even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s popular Golden Globes, which is influential but not nearly as prestigious. Last year the NYFCC winners lined up with Oscar best picture “The Artist,” director Michael Hazanavicius, and Best Actress, “The Iron Lady”‘s Meryl Streep.
Last year’s NYFCC voting date was mired in controversy as the group attempted to get ahead of the pack–specifically, the National Board of Review, which historically weighs in first–by voting on November 28. But inevitably the group pushed back the date by one day in order to view David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but missed Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” altogether. Both factored in the eventual Oscar race; the Daldry wound up nominated for Best Picture. So the group checked ahead to make sure it could screen all the films and has reverted to a date closer to its usual time.
UPDATE: It turns out the NYFCC is ahead of the National Board of Review after all, which will vote December 5.
The awards ceremony, always a coveted New York ticket, will take place on January 7, 2013, at Crimson.
New additions to this year’s circle are New York Magazine’s Bilge Ebiri, the Village Voice’s Nick Pinkerton and Time Out New York’s Keith Ulrich. Full list of voting members, comprised of 26 men and eight women, is below.
