Trailer Watch: Stylish, Vivid Martial Arts Epic 'Wu Xia' from Peter Chan

Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s martial arts epic “Wu Xia” received glowing reviews out of Cannes in May and, following its domestic release in China this past summer, is dropkicking its way to VOD on October 26, and to US theaters next month. The film stars Donnie Yen and Takeshi Kaneshiro. Trailer below.

Official synopsis:

Liu Jin-xi (Yen) is a village craftsman whose quiet life is irrevocably shattered by the arrival of two notorious gangsters in the local general store. When Liu single-handedly saves the shopkeeper’s life, he comes under investigation by detective Xu Bai-jiu (Kaneshiro). Convinced that Liu’s martial arts mastery belies a hidden history of training by one of the region’s vicious clans, Xu doggedly pursues the shy hero–and draws the attention of China’s criminal underworld in the process.

Here’s the Hollywood Reporter:

“Bursting with light and color, and a torrent of martial arts action both swift and savage (arguably the best that lead actor Donnie Yen has choreographed for years), Wu Xia is coherently developed and stylishly directed by Peter Ho-Sun Chan to provide unashamedly pleasurable popular entertainment. Wu Xia created buzz before its premiere with acquisition by The Weinstein Company, which will release the title stateside as Dragon.”

And Variety:

“The repressed return with a vengeance in “Wu xia,” a satisfyingly sinewy fusion of martial-arts actioner and brain-tickling noir from busy producer-director Peter Ho-sun Chan. Channeling David Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence” by way of 1917 China, this clever if over-amped thriller tackles themes of identity, honor and the latent killer instinct with a playful spirit that’s never at odds with its underlying seriousness. Pleasurable pairing of Donnie Yen’s stoic heroics and Takeshi Kaneshiro’s droll detection.”
