AFM, Day 1: Seyfried & Dempsey, Morton & Hunt, Weinstein, Wiig, Wan & More Titles in the Mix [UPDATED]

A roundup of projects at day one of the American Film Market...

As the American Film Market (AFM) kicks off November 1, IM Global has come on board to produce Joe Carnahan’s “Stretch.” Patrick Wilson stars in the action film, with frequent IM Global partner Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions (“Paranormal Activity”) co-producing.

Below, a roundup of additional opening day market titles.

“Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage,” based on a book of short stories by Canadian author Alice Munro, stars Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Haylee Steinfeld and Nick Nolte in a comedy centering on a teenage girl who tries to spark a romance between her father and the nanny. The film is directed by Liz Johnson (2011’s “The Return”) and began shooting in late October in New Orleans. Mark Poirier wrote the script, with Dylan Sellers and Cassian Elwes producing.

The Weinstein Company has picked up rights to “The Untitled Chef Project,” written by Steven Knight. It follows an enfant terrible chef who assembles a “crack team” in order to bid for his third Michelin star.

“Saw” co-creator and “Insidious” director James Wan will co-produce found-footage horror film “House of Horror,” for which he also created the story. Dimension Films announced at the market that the film is in pre-production, with Max La Bella penning the script and Will Cannon attached to direct. No word yet on casting.

Simon West will be directing the next Jason Statham actioner “Heat,” a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film. Steven Chasman will produce for SJ Pictures along with Statham. The film is set in Las Vegas, where gambling-addicted Jack of all trades Nick Escalante (Statham) must take on the local mob when his friend is brutally beaten. 

Panorama Media and Samuel Hadida announced the impending production of action-adventure film “Castle Wolfenstein,” inspired by the game franchise. It will be written by Oscar-winner Roger Avary. The WW2-set project follows a young US army captain and British secret agent on a mission to Castle Wolfenstein, where Hitler is unveiling his newest weapon.

Radiant Films has come on board to handle international rights to “Decoding Annie Parker,” starring Samantha Morton, Helen Hunt, Aarol Paul and Rashida Jones. The drama, currently in post, is cinematographer Steven Bernstein’s directorial debut. The film is backed and presented by Ozymanias Productions. A synopsis is below:

Love, science, sex, infidelity, disease and comedy, DECODING ANNIE PARKER is the wild story of irrepressible Annie Parker and the almost discovery of a cure for cancer.  Based on a true story, the film follows geneticist Mary Claire King (Helen Hunt) who discovered a gene linked to breast cancer. Samantha Morton plays Annie Parker, a breast cancer patient who will do all she can to solve the mystery behind her illness, despite what the medical world says.

Amanda Seyfried and Patrick Dempsey will star in “Wonderful Tonight” for Myriad Pictures, which is selling worldwide rights at AFM. The romantic comedy, written by J. Mills Goodloe, will be directed by Christine Jeffs (“Sunshine Cleaning,” “Sylvia”). Castle Rock Entertainment’s Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer will produce. Synopsis below:

Wonderful Tonight is the story of an unlikely love affair that arises when a one night stand between a wealthy lifelong bachelor and a free-spirited young woman results in a child. Used to having women chase him because of his money and good looks, he is in for a surprise when two years later; she rejects him because of his selfish and arrogant past. Now he must prove himself as a father and try to win her heart.
