Another New Unscripted Series for AMC: The Network Greenlights 'Owner's Manual'

Following yesterday’s announcement that AMC had given the greenlight to two more scripted pilots — ’80s computer industry drama “Halt & Catch Fire” and Revolutionary War espionage story “Turn” — joining “Low Winter Sun” and the “Untitled LaGravenese/Tony Goldwyn project” to bring the network’s total up to four this year, AMC said today that it was adding another unscripted show to its programming slate.

While the network has consistently been very selective about the scripted projects it develops, it has been freer with reality fare, having ordered to series in the last year shows about taxidermy, sideshows and local talent competitions. It has also renewed Kevin Smith’s “Comic Book Men” (currently airing), “The Pitch” and “Small Town Security.” The newest addition to the network is “Owner’s Manual,” a show that will feature weekly challenges in which hosts Ed Sanders (“Extreme Makeover Edition”) and Marcus Hunt (HGTV’s “Hammer Heads”) attempt to operate things like fighter jets and submarines, one having read the instruction manual/guidelines/etc. and the other going by instinct.

Produced by Asylum Entertainment (“The Kennedys,” “Addicted,” “The Locator”), the show  is a half-hour series that will run for eight episodes and premiere in the third quarter of 2013. Making those high-end dramas is difficult and expensive, and the network’s got airtime to fill for nights of the week when “Mad Men,” “The Walking Dead” and the departing “Breaking Bad” aren’t on. That’s especially true for Thursday, which AMC is planning on making its evening for unscripted series starting in the new year on February 14th, when “Comic Book Men” as well as the new “Freakshow” and “Immortalized” will air as a block.
