Having premiered “Crossfire Hurricane,” Brett Morgen’s documentary on the Rolling Stones, earlier this month, HBO announced today that it’s producing another authorized musical doc in the new year, this time about Beyoncé, by Beyoncé. The multiple Grammy-winner will make her feature directorial debut with the apparently yet-untitled autobiographical project, which is slated to debut on February 16th, 2013.
The film will be a mix of performance and private footage that will offer, in the words of the network’s president of programming Michael Lombardo, a look at “Beyoncé the person… a vibrant, vulnerable, unforgettable woman.” Beyoncé said that “Some of my favorite shows are on HBO, so I am excited that my film will be part of its bold programming. This film was so personal to me, it had to have the right home.”
In addition to home movie footage of the actress and singer’s childhood in Houston, glimpses of her live act and a look at how she works in the studio and in running Parkwood Entertainment, the business she founded, the film will offer first-person footage the performer shot herself on her laptop featuring her thoughts on celebrity, being on stage and becoming a mother. Beyoncé is also the executive producer of this project, news of which first surfaced in August when it was being shopped around to distributors. While this will mark the performer’s first film directorial effort, she’s co-directed several of her own music videos, including the one for “Ego,” below.
