Bigelow and Boal Talk 'Zero Dark Thirty' with Nightline: Controversy, Meticulous Recreation & Chastain's Character

Check out this interview by Nightline’s Martha Raddatz with “Zero Dark Thirty” director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, in which the two talk about the controversy surrounding classified information that arose before the film began shooting, meticulously recreating the house in Abbottobad, the amazing woman at the center of the hunt for Bin Laden and more. Highlights and a segment of the interview are below.

Check out our “Zero Dark Thirty” review and Bigelow/Boal/Cast Q & A  here.

Boal on the investigation begun mid-film about the use of classified information:

“I certainly did a lot of homework, but I never asked for classified material. To my knowledge, I never received any… There were major players in the Republican party characterizing the script and the movie before I had even written it.”

Bigelow on recreating the house in Abbottobad, tile by tile:

“Everything that we could find from that [ABC] video, we replicated… Frame after frame after frame, and found the tile that was identical to that, and built the house with every conceivable piece of information that we could find. We replicated it.”

On the reali-life inspiration for Jessica Chastain’s character:

Mark Boal: “It was a couple of months into the research when I heard about a woman, part of the team, and she has played a big role and she had gone to Jalalabad and been deployed with the SEALs on the night of the raid.”

Kathryn Bigelow: “When I realized at the heart of this hunt, at the heart of this 10-year odyssey was this woman, this young woman who had a kind of tenacity and a dedication and a courage, she would never say no, I was excited to take it on.”
