Brooklyn Gets A New Hybrid Movie Theater; Opens Tonight With Screening of 'Holy Motors'

The video rental shop Videology reopens its doors tonight in the hipster haven of Williamsburg, Brooklyn — only this time, the space will boast a new hybrid movie theater that can seat up to 45 people. And like the neighborhood’s other popular art house theater, the Nitehawk Cinema, the revamped venue now comes loaded with a fully stocked bar.

In an exclusive first look at the space, Time Out New York revealed the unique layout that’s outfitted with booths and tables, in lieu of traditional theater seating. Videology will host screenings nightly, in addition to keeping its DVD rental business going. However, the main source of revenue will be the bar. “It became obvious for us about three years ago that things weren’t the way they used to be and probably would never would be again,” co-founder Wendy Chamberlain told Indiewire earlier this week. “It wasn’t through any fault of our own. With streaming on Hulu and Netflix, it became easier for people to watch things on their computers. We tried to ride it out as long as we could. It took us a little while to realize that we had to either change or close.” (Stay tuned for more details from Indiewire’s conversation with Chamberlain soon.)

The revamped space will re-open its doors to the public this evening with a screening of Leos Carax’s Cannes favorite “Holy Motors” at 7pm, followed by a free after-party at 9pm with an hour-long open bar. Upcoming events include a screening of “Grey Gardens” with director Albert Maysles in attendance, an R. Kelly Night, weeklong runs of “The First Winter” and “New Jerusalem” as well as an all-day Thanksgiving movie marathon. Go HERE for full schedule.
