VODetails: ‘Vamps’

VODetails: 'Vamps'

More and more films premiere on Video on Demand — if they don’t simply bypass a theatrical release altogether. Because VOD reviews are often scarce and hard to find, Criticwire created VODetails, a recurring column to help you figure out whether a new VOD release is worth your hard-earned dollar. This time we’re looking at “Vamps,” a horror comedy about socialite vampires and a “Clueless” reunion for director Amy Heckerling and star Alicia Silverstone — not a documentary about the history of improvisation at the movies.

Director: Amy Heckerling

Cast: Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter, Dan Stevens

Current Criticwire AverageB+ (out of 6 reviews)

Official Synopsis: “A comedy from the creator of ‘Clueless’ and ‘Loser,’ ‘Vamps’ is the story of two young sassy female vampires (Alicia Silverstone, Krysten Ritter) living the high life in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize her immortality. Have hundreds of years of dating and partying finally taught these two how to find Mr. Right? And when they do, will he be worth the sacrifice?”

Eric Kohn, Indiewire:

“A surprisingly enjoyable tongue-in-cheek New York comedy.”

Andrew Schenker, Slant Magazine:

“Just about everything works in Heckerling’s film, a smart, open-hearted piece of work that manages to put its seemingly endless supply of clever conceits in service of a rich and moving tale of friendship, love, and the crushing weight of too much history.”

Peter Labuza, LabuzaMovies.com:

“The film might be called slight, but its slightness is essential to its appeal.”

Scott Tobias, The A.V. Club:

“A vampire comedy suffused with tart and agreeable Borscht Belt one-liners, like a stealth TV pilot waiting for pickup.”

Staci Layne Wilson, Horror.com:

“Not very cinematic, but cuteness abounds.”

Eric Hynes, Time Out New York:

“The film’s comedic potential is defanged by a pervading tone of embittered nostalgia.”

Vamps” is now available on VOD, iTunes, and Blu-ray.
