Watch: New Trailer for Michael Haneke's 'Amour' Features Praise from Critics (VIDEO)

A new trailer has been released for Michael Haneke’s Palme d’Or-winning “Amour,” the story of a married couple, Georges (Jean-Louis Trinignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), whose love for one another is strained and tested after Anne has an attack.

The trailer itself leaves much for the imagination; it’s an inexplicably quiet look at the film’s characters, with the stillness only broken by unanswered questions. The couple’s daughter, Eva (Isabelle Huppert), makes an appearance at the beginning of the trailer to comment on the unbreakable bond of love she felt between her parents as a child. As if to serve as a response to his daughter’s sentiments, we next hear Georges scream in the middle of the night, the trailer’s only jolting moment.

Although the differences between this trailer and its predecessor are very slight, the insertion of praise from various critics — lauding the film as “A stunningly moving experience,” and Haneke as “Arguably the greatest living filmmaker” — reminds viewers that despite its apparent tranquility, “Amour” is not a film to be taken lightly.

Sony Pictures Classics opens it in select theaters December 19. Watch trailer below:
