And now, it’s time for another installment of Weird Pull Quote Theater!
From: The Village Voice, Vol. LVII No. 48
Movie: “Hitchcock”
Criticwire Average: B- (out of 24 critics)
Pull Quote: “Hitch Perfect.”
Author: Kyle Smith, New York Post
Original Quote, in Context: “‘Psycho’ analysis of the Master of Suspense is nearly Hitch perfect.”
Why It’s Weird: Well, for one thing, the original quote says the film is “nearly Hitch perfect,” a small but important difference (Smith gave the film a less-than-perfect three out of four star rating). Cutting that single word changes things quite a bit. But even more importantly from a weirdness perspective: the original quote isn’t even from Kyle Smith’s review — it’s from the headline of Kyle Smith’s review (the word ‘perfect’ doesn’t appear in the body of the piece). I guess “A good-natured study in film-nerd humor!” (an actual, ready-made pull quote from Smith’s review) didn’t target the right audience. Oh well. Did no one say “‘Hitchcock’ is a guaranteed ‘good evening’ at the theater!”? Because that would have been fantastic.
