Bret Easton Ellis Throws a Misogynistic Hissy Fit Because ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Director Kathryn Bigelow is a Woman

Bret Easton Ellis Throws a Misogynistic Hissy Fit Because 'Zero Dark Thirty' Director Kathryn Bigelow is a Woman

It’s almost not worth mentioning, because sexism from a misogynist really doesn’t deserve any attention– but Bret Easton Ellis attempting to degrade Kathryn Bigelow and her latest directorial effort–which happens to be kicking ass on the awards circuit–is an embarassment (for him) and a rather blatant indication that the conversation around the industry’s gender inequality is far from over. The “American Psycho” writer took to Twitter to declare that,  “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated.” He goes on to say that her films are not “visionary filmmaking,” but rather “just OK junk.” Just a reminder–Ellis’ latest film, “The Canyons,” stars Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, which he and director Paul Schrader raised funds for on Kickstarter.

Yes, this is the same man who said that “There’s something about the medium of film itself that I think requires the male gaze. We’re watching, and we’re aroused by looking, whereas I don’t think women respond that way to films, just because of how they’re built.”

As Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams puts it, “Bigelow’s likely too busy picking up prizes in a fisherman’s giant net these days to give a crap what the likes of Ellis thinks of her. But his gross attitude, that a woman’s value as an artist is contingent upon her allure, is despairingly pervasive. And it’s a notion that’s worth precisely less than zero.”

So why call attention to this? Because it’s going to be that much more satisfying when Bigelow doesn’t bother responding to this twit’s tweet–and gets another handful of Oscar nominations and wins on February 24 for “Zero Dark Thirty.”
