Cinema Guild Acquires DVD and VOD Rights for Terence Nance's Gotham Winner 'An Oversimplification of Her Beauty'

The Cinema Guild has picked up U.S. home video, digital and non-theatrical distribution rights for Terence Nance’s recent Gotham Award-winnerAn Oversimplification of Her Beauty.” The filmmakers will release the film theatrically in 2013, followed by a DVD and VOD release via Cinema Guild.

“Oversimplification,” which debuted at Sundance last January and won the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You Award at the Gothams on November 27, has attracted a number of executive producers, including hip-hop artist and mogul Jay Z.

The film is Nance’s debut feature, and documents his relationship with a young woman named Namik Minter, with whom he’s in love, but who remains resolutely unavailable. In Variety’s positive review, the film is described as “not so much trying to woo Hollywood” but betrays a “vaguely French New Wave style to various forms of animation, making the case for why he and Minter should be available. Instead, as he put it, I got ‘friend-zoned.'”
