Raya Martin (“Indepencia”) and Mark Peranson (“Waiting for Sancho”) are co-directing “La Ultima Pelicula,” a film that begins principal photography Dec. 16 in Yucatán, Mexico. The pair also wrote the screenplay for the film.

The fiction-documentary hybrid takes place in the context of the pending Mayan Apocalypse, when a filmmaker and his guide traverse the Mexican countryside with the goal of making the last movie, a contemporary update of the acid Western. Alex Ross Perry, Gabino Rodriguez and Iazua Larios star in the project, which takes inspiration from the myths of the American West constructed by filmmakers Sam Peckinpah, Monte Hellman and Dennis Hopper.

Pablo Cruz of Canana Films is producing the micro-budgeted project along with Peranson and Martin. DOX: LAB and Denmark’s CPH:DOX are also producing.

“We knew about Mark’s and Raya’s previous work, and when we heard about this project we were stunned and immediately decided to take the opportunity to work together on this great film,” said Cruz. “We feel very lucky that they have decided to do this film in Mexico, and to show the greatness of our culture.”

Peranson is editor and publisher of Cinema Scope magazine and head of programming for the Locarno Film Festival, beginning in 2013.

“We are gracious for the support and faith of Canana, the patience of the good people at CPH:DOX, and our wonderful actors who have agreed to go with us on this certifiably crazy adventure,” said Martin and Peranson. “Get ready for fireworks!”

Cruz, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna launched Canana in 2005, and the company has released “Abel,” “The Loneliest Planet” and “No” in Mexico. The company has the biopic “Chavez” in post-production.
