With the long-awaited Walter Salles-directed adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” coming out in select cities Dec. 21, the IFC Center in New York is looking to build anticipation with a week-long road movie retrospective selected by Salles. Which makes sense, since IFC Films acquired the film before Cannes and has high box-office and awards hopes for the picture.
The series will kick off Dec. 14 with a special sneak preview screening of “On the Road” with Salles in attendance, at 8 pm. It will then explore a variety of films from past decades, ranging from Edward G. Ulmer’s noir “Detour” to John Ford’s Western “The Searchers” and Wim Wender’s “Alice in the City,” among many more. In addition, a number of Salles’ own road films will be showcased, including the Oscar-nominated “Central Station” and “The Motorcycle Diaries.” Salles will be in attendence at select screenings to provide introductions.
A full schedule of the films can be found below, and more information and tickets can be found on the IFC Center’s official website.
