The Broadcast Film Critics Association have announced the nominations the 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” dominated with a record-setting 13 nominations.
The film took nods for best picture, director, adapted screenplay, editing, art direction, costume design, cinematography, makeup, and score, as well as acting nominations for Daniel Day-Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field.
Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” and David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook” were next in line with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively, including best picture. The three films were joined in that race by “Argo,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi,” “The Master,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”

The nominations were somewhat predictable, though a few surprises did pop up. Leonardo DiCaprio (and the entire “Django Unchained” cast, for that matter) was shut out of the best supporting actor category, despite the film being a best picture nominee. In his place was Matthew McConaughey (“Magic Mike”) and Javier Bardem (“Skyfall”), both of whom seem much more likely to make the Oscar race now that they’ve received the BFCA’s seal of approval.
Bardem’s “Skyfall” co-star Judi Dench made it into the best supporting actress race, as did — in perhaps the biggest surprise of the acting races — Ann Dowd, who is a genuine dark horse for an Oscar nod now for her work in “Compliance.”
The Critics Choice also notably added a bunch of new categories this year, including acting awards specific to comedy and action films. Batman (Christian Bale), Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Catwoman (Anne Hathaway, a triple nominee thanks to this, her “Les Mis” nod, and an acting ensemble nomination), Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence, who recieved a whopping four nominations because of this and three nominations in different categories for “Silver Linings”) and James Bond (Daniel Craig) were all nominees as a result in the action races. Paul Rudd, Rebel Wilson, Jack Black and Channing Tatum all managed nods in the comedy categories.
Though those categories should have no real impact on the overall race, the nominations in general help significantly make clear the overall race, though tomorrow’s SAG nominations and Thursday’s Golden Globe nods will make it all the more so.
