Dave Grohl’s chest must have swelled just a little to hear one of the interviewees in his new documentary “Sound City” exclaim, “We chose Sound City because ‘Nevermind’ was recorded there!” Grohl’s directorial debut, which will premiere at Sundance 2013, traces the history of the famed California recording studio, where from 1972 until 2011 everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Fleetwood Mac — and, indeed, Grohl’s former band Nirvana — recorded scads of seminal albums.

In the official trailer below, Lars Ulrich, Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, and others sound off about a place that by virtue of its allegiance to traditional methods was pushed into extinction by changing technology. Grohl conceived the film after purchasing Sound City’s mythic Neve 8028 console — judged by some to be the crème de la crème of analog recording equipment — but the many representatives of rock royalty who appear in “Sound City” make clear that the studio held an allure that could not be explained away by hardware alone.

The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs January 17-27.
