ABC Cancels ‘Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23’

ABC Cancels 'Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23'

It’s time to bid farewell to the sight of James Van Der Beek semi-ironically playing himself, at least for now — ABC has pulled and effectively canceled sitcom “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.”

Star Krysten Ritter confirmed the series had been given notice this afternoon on Twitter (“my beloved fans, sad to confirm that it is true. Don’t Trust the B— #apt23 has been cancelled. thank you so much for your support“) after the Hollywood Reporter noted that the show had been yanked from the network’s Tuesday night schedule, and that the remaining eight episodes would go unaired.

Created by Nahnatchka Khan, “Don’t Trust the B—-” premiered in April of last year as a mid-season replacement, and starred Ritter as the titular “b—-” Chloe, an amoral, promiscuous New York party girl who was besties with Van Der Beek and who took naive Midwesterner June (Dreama Walker of “Compliance”) under her wing as a roommate. Despite a surprisingly good cast that also included comedian Eric Andre and some very odd directions in terms of its humor, the show never quite found its footing, tone-wise, and had little success with ratings, with ABC shuffling it around on the schedule.

Van Der Beek took to Twitter himself to write:

I know most of you watched us on your own time & platform and that the competitive network scheduling game is irrelevant to you, but network TV is a business dictated by Nielson [sic] ratings. And while that’s an antiquated business model, it’s the only one they’ve got. Thanks to all who tuned in. We had a blast making it. Can’t imagine a more fun work environment with better people. But onto the next. And please, no bashing ABC. While I’m sure no one there would say they think they nailed it when it came to programming #Apt23 this year tou’ve got to give ABC props for ever picking us up in the first place. They took a shot at something original & edgy. I respect them for it.
