AMC Announces a Premiere Date for ‘Mad Men’ Season Six

AMC Announces a Premiere Date for 'Mad Men' Season Six

The sixth season of “Mad Men” will kick off on AMC on Sunday, April 7th at 9pm, the network announced today. As with the previous season, the period drama will start with a two-hour premiere written by creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner, with fellow executive producer Scott Hornbacher slated to direct. (Hornbacher previously helmed the episodes “Wee Small Hours,” “Waldorf Stories,” “Far Away Places” and “Dark Shadows.”)

The series will shift back into its regular 10pm timeslot in its second week with an episode written by Jonathan Igla and Weiner, and directed by star Jon Hamm.

According to Weiner, “To be able to continue exploring the stories of these characters for a sixth season is an amazing opportunity. “We love mining this world and look forward to bringing the audience stories that we hope will continue to both surprise and entertain them.”

The showrunner told TV Guide that the entire cast, with the exception of Jared Harris, would be returning, and that the show, which left off in 1967, would be making another jump in time into the late ’60s, an era Weiner has struggled to depict in an unexpected way: “I didn’t know the show would go on this long. And this part of the 60s I’ve always been fighting an image of the period that has been created by books and movies. It’s the baby boomers’ childhood. There is a propaganda that goes along with the whole era.”

For those needing to catch up on what’s been happening at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, AMC will rolling out season five of the show via AMC On Demand starting February 11th and rerunning them at 6am Sunday mornings starting March 3rd.
