Awards Schedule Heats Up: Oscar and BAFTA Nominations, Critics Choice and Golden Globes Awards, Parties Galore

Friday afternoon, the day the Oscar ballots were due, I checked out the Academy lobby on Wilshire to see if long lines of voters were queueing up at the three kiosks in the corner. One lonely voter sat down to enter his ballot–which took ages, with an attendant hovering over his shoulder. So apparently most of the Academy folks eventually figured out how to either mail their Oscar ballots, file online–or gave up.

I was handing in my driver’s license so I can cover the Oscar nominations live early Thursday morning. It’s fun to see all the distributors and publicists waiting with bated breath for the announcements, which will be made by this year’s Oscar host Seth Macfarlane (trying to boost his TV Q) and Emma Stone.

The holidays are over and the calendar is filling up. Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, depending on your location, brings the BAFTA nominations (7.35am GMT / 2.35am EST 9th January, 11.35pm PST 8th January). Sunday night I filed my votes for the Critics Choice Awards; their live CW awards show has expanded to the Santa Monica airport’s Barker Hanger; they expect almost all of their nominees to attend. The gang will be table-hopping between their studio tables–we’ll be sitting at one– to hang out with pals between live on-air bits.

I’ll see many of the same “Lincoln”/”Argo”/”Zero Dark Thirty”/”Life of Pi”/”Les Miserables”/”Django Unchained/”Silver Linings Playbook” gang at the AFI’s intimate sit-down lunch on Friday at the Four Seasons honoring the AFI’s ten best films and television shows of the year.

With the Golden Globes hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey on Sunday, Hollywood enters weekend party mode. Saturday brings daytime Indie Spirit and BAFTA nominations parties, the HFPA’s 10th annual Globes Foreign Language Symposium at Loyola Marymount, which will be live-streamed this year, and yet another Universal “Les Miserables” celebration at Spago (a Saturday pre-Globes fete). There’s always a raft of Sunday Beverly Hilton Globes parties (HBO is always the hot ticket).
