MoMA's Documentary Fortnight to Open with 'Pablo's Winter' and 'Sofia's Last Ambulance'

The Museum of Modern Art has announced its 12th annual Documentary Fortnight festival, a two-week showcase of nonfiction film and media that kicks off on February 15. This year’s festival will open with Chico Pereira’s “Pablo’s Winter,” winner of the Competition for Student Documentary at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) and Ilian Metev’s “Sofia’s Last Ambulance,” which premiered at Cannes.

Among other notable films screening at the festival are John Gianvito, Jon Jost, Minda Martin, Travis Wilkerson, and Soon-Mi Yoo’s examination of the war in Afghanistan, “Far from Afghanistan,” which premiered at TIFF and Tinatin Gurchiani’s Sundance winning “The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear” which captures lives of Georgian youth in an experimental casting call.

Along with the festival’s 22 international feature-length films and two shorts this year’s special events include New Cuban Shorts, a spotlight of nine emerging Cuban filmmakers, and MoMA Selects: POV, a retrospective of films from PBS’s 25-year-long series “POV.” MoMA Selects: POV will feature the world premiere of Christine Turner’s “Homegoings” about a Harlem funeral director as well as the television series’ first film from 1988, Louis Alvarez and Andy Kolker’s “American Tongues.”

The festival runs from February 15 – March 4.
