Expanding from 3 to 15 screens, Michael Haneke’s “Amour” had the best per-theater-average of any holdover release, clearly benefiting from its surprise 5 Oscar nominations including best picture and best director (the overall box office was led by another film that got an Oscar boost, “Zero Dark Thirty”).
The film grossed $270,575, a 352% jump from last weekend. It averaged $18,038, helping take the Sony Pictures Classics title’s total to $651,851 ahead of what will surely be a healthy expansion to more screens.
Also getting a boost was “Silver Linings Playbook,” which had its best weekend ever in its 9th frame. Adding 65 screens to hit 810, the film jumped 38% to gross $5,000,000. That made for a $6,173 average and a new total of $41,305,705. Distributor The Weinstein Company will expand the film — nominated for best picture and in every acting category — wide next weekend.
The best per-theater-average overall went to The Weinstein Company’s Oscar nomination-less newbie “Quartet,” which opened on 2 screens after having a Oscar qualifying run in December. The film — starring Maggie Smith (who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role) — grossed $50,033, averaging $25,017.
