Sundance 2013: Entertainment One Invites 'We Are What We Are' Into the Family

Canada-based distributor Entertainment One has closed a deal to take U.S. rights to “We Are What We Are,” a creepy Park City at Midnight selection of the Sundance Film Festival. One source puts the sale in the low-seven-figures range. EOne plans a theatrical release later this year.

“Stake Land” co-writer-director Jim Mickle directed “We Are What We Are,” a remake of a Mexican film about a family of cannibals struggling to keep their rituals intact without the authorities finding them after the matriarch dies. Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Michael Parks, Wyatt Russell and Kelly McGillis star. Nick Damici co-wrote the script with Mickle.

Rodrigo Bellott, Andrew D. Corkin, Linda Moran, Nicholas Shumaker and Jack Turner produced.

“We’re so very excited to add ‘We Are What We Are’ to our U.S. slate,” said eOne Films U.S. exec Dylan Wiley. “Jim Mickle’s talent was obvious in ‘Mulberry Street’ and ‘Stake Land,’ but this film fulfills his vision on a whole new level and will put him in his rightful place among the masters of genre filmmaking. It will be our pleasure to introduce him to an even wider fan base and we’re confident that audiences will eat up the film.”

WME Global repped the sale for the filmmakers. Memento Films is handling international rights.

EOne has continued to ramp up its Stateside acquisitions in the last year, adding “We Are What We Are” to the two pick-ups it made in the weeks after the Toronto Film Festival in September: Sergio Castellitto’s “Twice Born” and Brian De Palma’s “Passion.”
