EW Previews ‘Star Trek Into Darkness,’ Madness of Abrams’ Career

EW Previews 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' Madness of Abrams' Career

J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot opened in 2009 and earned $386 million worldwide. Four years later the director returns with “Star Trek Into Darkness” — out May 17. He tells EW in their sneak preview issue that his career–complete with a “Star Wars” reboot–is currently “madness.”

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana return in “Into Darkness” and are joined by villain Benedict Cumberbatch, rumored to be playing “super villain” Khan. Abrams is tight-lipped; Pine tells EW he is a “benevolent dictator” with revealing plots. Lots more action is in store with “Into Darkness,” including attacks on planet Earth’s London and San Francisco. Saldana says her character also “kicks more ass” this go-round.

Due to Abrams’ new gig with “Star Wars,” Pine isn’t sure if the director will return to direct the third installment of “Star Trek.” He tells EW he’ll be disappointed but that “there are other people in his circle that will carry on.”

The issue is available February 8.
